Overview
The EWPA Trained Operator or Yellow Card Training Program was designed for people needing to develop their skills and knowledge required to operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs or commonly known as EWPs, scissor lifts, knuckle boom lifts etc). Our training course provides training in the safe use of various types of elevated work platforms including boom type MEWPs with boom length under 11 metres. We offer applicants to complete singular or multiple modules, depending on the type of EWP they will be operating.

- Vertical Lift (VL)
- Scissor Lift(SL)
- Self Propelled Boom Lift (BL)
- Trailer Lift(TL)
- Truck Mounted Lift(TM)
Course Outline
The EWP Operator License / Yellow Card Training course offers comprehensive theoretical and hands on training provided by our trainers who are accredited by the EWPA. In completing the course, you can expect to learn the skills required to safely operate various types of MEWPs.
Course participants will gain theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills in the following areas:
- Hazard identification, risk assessment and controls
- Fall arrest harness inspection, fitting and use
- Identify safe operating parameters using the data plate and manual
- Conduct pre and post operational checks
- Operation of EWP
- Emergency lowering procedures
- Theory assessment and practical observation and demonstration
Outcome
Upon successful completion of the Yellowcard training course our Accredited Trainer will submit training records with the proof of training documents and your photograph to the EWPA who will approve your training and provide you with an EWP Operator Licence. You will be able to apply for a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301D -Operate Elevating Work Platforms upon successful completion of the course. Additional Charges will apply. Please advise our Accredited Trainer if you require this as they will have to complete additional paperwork.
An interim record of training from the EWPA will be emailed to you upon approval of your licence by the EWPA and this can be used as an interim licence when operating a MEWP until you receive your yellow card. The Yellow card will be posted to the address on the course enrollment form.
Course Prerequisites
The Training program has no pre-requisite units. However, EWPs require operators to have a thorough understanding of the risks associated with using them. This includes being able to read and understand technical information such as instructions for emergency lowering systems, wind speed ratings, variable rated capacity restrictions, operator’s manuals, risk assessments and logbook checklists.
Participants should be 18 years of age. Operating restrictions apply for those under 18 years of age.
Duration
Approximately 6 hours, this depends upon class size and prior knowledge and experience.
Fees and charges
The EWPA recommends a course fee of $400. Jack Australia provides below this recommended price, we provide singular at $300 or multiple modules starting at $350, there are no charges for the use of scissor lifts, knuckle boom list, or vertical lifts for use during training, but charges may apply if you require training on trailer mount or truck mounted training modules.
Class Size
Classes are limited to 10 people.
License Renewal
The Yellow Card is valid for five years from the date of training; an email will be sent from the EWPA (1) one month prior to the licence expiring, inviting the licence holder to renew for another five years. Currently the online EWPA renewal fee is currently $50 and involves a short theoretical refresher and assessment to be undertaken to ensure currency of knowledge.
